The main highway is in excellent condition, and the majority of roads are  good.  Most  attractions can be reached from any hotel within an hour. In addition to car rental companies, taxis, and air  conditioned buses, there are plenty of tour companies and local travel agencies that offer  excellent guided  excursions. Playa del Carmen also has ferry service to Cozumel and an airstrip for small  plane tours. Puerto  Aventuras has an excellent marina. You can rent scooters or bicycles for around town,  though most everything is  within comfortable walking distance and taxis fares are reasonable.
